Drawing Faces for the Beginning Artist

There are some little known facts that will help you in drawing faces. Don't let it intimidate you. You can learn to draw faces. Let me give you some helpful hints. First did you know that the width of an eye is equal to the distance between the eyes? Did you know that the width of the widest part of the nose is equal to the width of an eye? The corners of the mouth should line up with the pupils of the eye.The eyes are one half the way down on the face. This is usually done wrong because the measurement is from the crown of the head not the hairling. Usually people think the eyes are one third of the way down the face. The ears are usually between the eyes and the mouth. Sometimes the lips on the mouth are not lines at all but just shadows filled in. The top lip shadows part of the bottom lip therefore a shadow must be added under the upper lip. The part between the mouth is not one continued line between the lips, but a curve or three curves at least. Regarding the highlight in the eyes, it is not a dot. When light hits a curved object like the eye, it is curved like half a circle. Opposite that is a broken line of lighter light being refracted from travel throught the eye. Making a chart of these tips will help you as you begin. Also you can trace the face on a tracing page. It is then removed and you free hand the sketch. The tracing is used to place back over the drawing to check to see if you varied from the person you were drawing. You are not tracing the original sketch. You are making a map to check as you go along. I hope this helps and I will be back with more drawing and painting tips for you.

Great Hub, very helpful information! I have always loved to draw but shy away from faces for lack of the very tidbits of info you shared! Perhaps this will motivate me to try drawing faces again! I look forward to reading more of your hubs!
